The Weld Quality Technician is responsible for ensuring that all welding and fabrication processes meet established internal quality standards, customer specifications, and industry codes (such as AWS, ASME, or API). This role involves conducting visual inspections, performing non-destructive testing (NDT), verifying welding parameters, and auditing finished assemblies to prevent defects and ensure structural integrity.
-
Inspection & Testing: Perform in-process and final visual inspections (VT) of weldments to check for defects such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, and dimensional inaccuracies.
-
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Conduct or coordinate Dye Penetrant (PT), Magnetic Particle (MT), and Ultrasonic (UT) testing as required by product specifications.
-
Code & Blueprint Verification: Interpret mechanical blueprints, engineering drawings, and welding symbols to ensure fabricators are following designated Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
-
Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate QA/QC logs, inspection reports, and non-conformance records. Sign off on routing sheets for compliant parts.
-
Defect Resolution: Identify non-conforming welds, tag defective parts, and work with welders and production supervisors to determine the root cause and execute rework procedures.
-
Equipment Calibration: Ensure all inspection tools (weld gauges, micrometers, calipers) and welding equipment are properly calibrated and maintained.
-
Safety & Compliance: Monitor the shop floor for compliance with safety regulations and verify that welders are working within their active Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
What You’ll Bring
-
High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in Welding Technology, Metallurgy, or Quality Assurance is highly preferred.
-
AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or ASNT Level II certification in NDT methods (VT, PT, MT, UT) is strongly preferred.
-
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in hands-on welding, metal fabrication, or industrial quality control.
-
Deep understanding of industry codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX). High proficiency in reading blueprints, engineering diagrams, and weld symbols.
-
Hands-on experience with standard inspection tools (fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauges, calipers, micrometers).
-
Strong attention to detail, clear written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to provide constructive feedback to production teams.
